A Character Interview with Chloe from QUEEN'S DESTINY (BLOOD PROPHECY BOOK 1) plus a conversation with author Barb Jones!

Today we're bringing something different to Writing in the Modern Age in the form of a character interview.  These character interviews, now and in the future, should prove to be very enlightening for all of us.

We have the pleasure of meeting Chloe, a character from Blood Prophecy: Queen's Destiny. We'll get a chance to talk to the author, Barb Jones, in a bit, but now we have on the stage...Chloe!

Interview

Marie Lavender:  Hello, Chloe.  Please have a seat.

Character Chloe:  Thank you.  It's a pleasure to be here.

Marie:  We're going to start out with some simple questions, okay?

Chloe:  Sure.

Marie:  So, what is your occupation? Are you any good at it?  Do you like it?

Chloe: I work in the Seattle Museum of Science and History.  I’m responsible for researching and tagging the dates of all the artifacts.  I am good at it though I have the gift of Sight as well.  The Sight helps me in knowing more than just the dates.  I see the people’s lives that were affected by these artifacts and to me, it gives them more of a personality.  I love my job.  I usually work at night, so when I’m off, the rest of Seattle is sleeping so I can enjoy the nightlife.

Marie:  I see.  So, what is your family like?

Chloe: My “family” consists of a coven of witches, but I do have my mom and my sister Becca.  My mom and Tom helped me to discover my special gifts but it was really Tom who trained me to be a powerful witch.  I love my coven.

Marie:  What did your childhood home look like, Chloe?

Chloe: We lived in Yakima for the most part, near an apple farm.  It was the closest thing we could buy that allowed us the privacy and the feel of the earth that we needed.  Becca and I would run for hours in the open practicing our powers.

Marie:  So, do you have any hobbies?  What do you enjoy doing?

Chloe: My biggest hobby right now is witchcraft, followed by going to the nightclubs.  I love the nightlife in Seattle and it’s the best place to meet men (giggle).  Although there are more losers out there because they don’t like to stay out late, it’s entertaining to me.

Marie:  LOL.  Chloe, I'm going to ask you some more serious questions now.

What is your greatest dream?

Chloe: I want to be the coven leader.  I believe I have the power to become the leader but there’s  a certain amount of charisma that I need to have as well.

Marie: What kind of person do you wish you could be? What is stopping you?

Chloe:   I wish I could be immortal.  My Chosen Family are all vampires.  They will live forever and I am a human witch.  It’s my destiny that is stopping me.  My destiny is that I will be the most powerful witch the world has seen since the Salem Witch Trials.

Marie:  Who was your first love?

Chloe:  My first love is Marcus.  He is my first and only.  Together, we are strong.  We have a connection that no one can understand.

Marie:  What is the most terrible thing that ever happened to you?

Chloe:   I was kidnapped when I was a teenager.  It was the most horrific experience but I don’t remember all that happened.

Marie:  Oh, no.  So sorry to hear that.

Let's try something else, Chloe.

Is there someone you pretend to like but really dislike?

Chloe:  Right now, I don’t like Michael.  I’m sure he’s nice and Amber is really into him, but there’s just something about him that really creeps me out.

Marie:  So, what is your deepest desire?

Chloe:  My deepest desire is to be a mother but I’m still young and now that we are connected to Amber, I don’t know if it will ever come true.

Marie:  What is your greatest fear?

Chloe:  It is losing Amber.

Marie:  Oh...all right.

Unfortunately, that's the buzzer telling me we're short on time. I want to thank you for visiting us today, Chloe.

Chloe:  My pleasure.

It was so interesting getting to know you.  (Waves at her guest as she heads off the stage.)

Now, let's shift over and get the perspective of the author.  We have Barb Jones on the stage today!  Hi!

Author Barb Jones:  Hi, it's so nice to be here.

Marie:  We just got to talk the heroine of your story, Chloe.  Quite an interesting character.

Can you tell us a little about her?

Barb:  Chloe is a young and vivacious woman.  She is what people would consider gothic, but she’s really a witch.  A true and powerful witch.  She may have a bit of an attitude but you can’t help but fall in love with her.

Marie:  So, what are your character's greatest strengths?

Barb:  She is magical and powerful.  She has the Sight to sense the histories of objects and persons.

Marie:  Awesome! What are her greatest weaknesses?

Barb:  She can be cocky and that attitude of hers can get her into trouble.

Marie:  What are some of her favorite foods?

Barb:  Let’s say that Chloe doesn’t cook much.  She’s always up for happy hour with her main gal pal.

Marie:  What's a positive quality that your character is unaware that he or she has?

Barb:  She has a heart of gold, though it doesn’t come out at first.

Marie:  Will readers like or dislike this character, and why?

Barb:  I think they will like her.  They will believe in the power of witches and her family history shows why she is so strong.

Marie:  Great! Well, now that we have a real taste of Chloe, we have a few questions for you as well as the author.

What first gave you the idea for Queen's Destiny, the first book of the Blood Prophecy Series?

Barb:  I was so tired of reading novels that didn’t bring vampires, werewolves, and witches to their true, glorious nature.  The books and movies like Twilight didn’t do it for me so I wanted something that would be cutting edge.

Marie:  That's great!

What is your writing style like?  Are you a pantster or a plotter?

Barb:  I am a pantster.  I never know how a chapter is going to start or end.  In fact, I dream at night while I sleep and sometimes that becomes part of my book.  I can’t follow an outline because I have a very wild imagination.

Marie:  I hear you on that one.  Sometimes I end up moving away from my outline because the character or story demands it.

So...I’m throwing this one in for our aspiring writers.  Did you come across any specific challenges in writing Queen's Destiny or getting it published?
What would you do differently the next time?

Barb:  I started out as an indie author and I submitted my manuscript two years later to World Castle Publishing.  I was so excited when I heard back from them, accepting my book.  My advice would be to never give up and to write from your imagination.  It’s a lot more freeing to let the characters develop when you just let that creative mind flow!

Marie:  I agree with both points.

Well, it was such a pleasure having you here on Writing in the Modern Age.

Readers, you will just have to pick up a copy of this awesome book!

Here is the blurb for Queen's Destiny, Blood Prophecy Book One.

Amber Stone, once a child prodigy, has just become curator of a special collection of Macedonian artifacts for the Seattle Museum of Natural History. Chloe, a prodigy of a different sort, holds a position at the museum focusing on tribal art. The two become fast friends, united by Amber's unsettling dreams and Chloe's unorthodox ways of dealing with them. Two strangers arrive in town, bringing with them a prophecy recorded more than three-thousand years ago, a prophecy that places Amber directly in the midst of a battle that has spanned a millennia.

About Barb Jones:

Having been born and raised in Hawaii, I loved telling stories ever since I was a child about vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and witches.  I was a little girl who loved scary stories, much to my mother's dismay.  The scarier - the better.  Hawaii was a perfect place for stories until I moved to Seattle.  I decided to turn a love for the supernatural into writing stories to see if others would love them as much as I do.  Currently, I live in Florida but since I'm a Seattle girl at heart, my stories take place in the Northwest.  I continue to write supernatural stories of vampires, werewolves, witches, and more while enjoying the beaches and sunshine.  I also love to help others and give back to my community.

  1. HI Barb, a very interesting character and author interview. Since I write in the Vampire genre' (although mine protect humans from the blood-sucking kind of vampires, human criminals and evil politicians) I prefer reading about vampires but it sounds like your novel(s) will include them alone with the witches so I'll look into getting your book.

    1. I appreciate you taking the time to look at my book. The series is mostly centered around the vampires, however I bring in other supernatural races in a way that should unite them under the Vampire Queen. Each race has its own version of the prophecy. I will look into your book as well! I can't wait! Thank you again for your note.
