In The Cruiserweight Series’ fourth
and final book, The Marilyn Diaries, readers will witness another phase
in the life of Donovan Klass, a character I introduced in The Cruiserweight
Series second book, The Cruiserweight’s Daughter and protagonist in
Klass Act, the series’ third book.
Now in his early thirties and the
father of four children (with a fifth on the way), Donovan finds a
long-forgotten and unopened box while helping his father, Peter, clean the
garage. When he opens it, Donovan discovers an array of diaries and other items
that belonged to his mother, Marilyn, who succumbed to breast cancer when
Donovan was seventeen.
His fascination with the box’s
contents not only prompts Donovan to read her old diaries, but also considers
writing a book about his family. From Marilyn’s teenage years in the late
2000‘s, attending business school and then beginning her career as a secretary,
meeting, dating, and marrying Peter Klass, life on the road with her new
husband, to their son’s birth and childhood - and everything in between -
Donovan soon discovers some revelations through both his mother’s writings and
people from the Klass family’s past in addition to having a true inside look
inside his parents’ marriage.
He eventually learns another secret
that is neither found in any of Marilyn’s diaries nor any of her other
mementos. Is it possible that she was aware such an event took place but failed
to mention it, knowing her son would someday come across the diaries...or she
didn’t know about anything at all?
Will he learn the entire story of a
long-buried secret, and if he does, how will Donovan handle everything?
Moreover, how many others will be affected by what is revealed?
I think old secrets exist in the
lives of many families, some meant never to be told. Perhaps this was the case
with what shocking revelation Donovan inadvertently encountered...and how close
it had been to him the last few decades.
What did he find out? Only readers
of The Marilyn Diaries will know for sure.
