A Character Interview with Caine from DEMONICALLY YOURS plus a conversation with author Lauren Peyton!

Today we're bringing something different to Writing in the Modern Age in the form of a character interview.  These character interviews, now and in the future, should prove to be very enlightening for all of us.

We have the pleasure of meeting The One The Only Caine, a character from Demonically Yours. We'll get a chance to talk to the author, Lauren Peyton, in a bit, but now we have on the stage...Caine!

Interview

Marie Lavender:  Hello, Caine.  Please have a seat.

Character Caine:  Thank you.  It's a pleasure to be here.

Marie:  We're going to start out with some simple questions, okay?

Caine:  Of course.

Marie:  So, what is your occupation? Are you any good at it?  Do you like it?

Caine: I am a demon of lust, I inspire your dreams and leave you quivering, begging for more. (Adjusts himself.) I am good at it, and it’s the best damn gig I could ever imagine. I met my female because of my job.

Marie:  All right. What is your family like?

Caine: I grew up in a demonic training camp. I had no family till I met Ava. She’s pretty great. I think I’ll keep her around (winks).

Marie:  What did your childhood home look like?

Caine:  Looked like Hell… lots of brimstone, fire, yelling. You know. The usual when you think of hell.

Marie:  I see.

Do you have any hobbies? What do you enjoy doing?

Caine: I enjoy having sex; the time between Ava’s legs is the best part of my day. I try to have at least two sessions a day, inspiring wet dreams, annoying the hell out of my female. Spanking… oh and I love to train other demons on their power.

Marie:  (Clears throat.) Good lord, Caine. Let's try to keep it PG-13 for this interview, shall we?

(Shrugs.)

So, what is your greatest dream?

Caine:  Shit, don’t tell anyone but I want Ava to stay mated to me. Maybe I can convince her uncle I am a good guy. I have another but you ***** would make fun of me for it so I am not sharing this little detail. You can wonder. Yes, it’s kinky by the way.

Marie:  What kind of person do you wish you could be? What is stopping you?

Caine:  I wish I could be normal for Ava, I could protect her easily from mortals but I feel like I fail at protecting her because of our natures. I can’t stop being a demon, I would be found no matter what.

Marie:  Yeah, I can see how that would be hard.

So...
what's the most terrible thing that ever happened to you?

Caine: When Ava got injured and I thought I was going to lose her. She had to save my ass. That was pretty ego crushing. Yes, I am chauvinistic enough to not want a woman to save me; it’s my job to save her and keep her safe.

Marie:  (Tries to hide a smile.)

What was your dream growing up? Did you achieve that dream? If so, in what ways was it not what you expected? If you never achieved the dream, why not?

Caine: I wanted to be the best hunting demon ever. I trained for hours a day and eventually got my first assignment. It went so well that I got handed assignment after assignment. I earned my spot in the hierarchy of hell. I have my dream. Ava recently became part of my dream.

Marie:  Who is your role model?

Caine: Don’t tell the asshole, but I’ve looked up to Avaraz for a good while. He has literally been through hell to protect those he loved. You don’t even know what he really did in his attempts to protect his woman. It’s honorable. I would do the same to protect Ava.

Marie:  Okay. Is there someone you pretend to like but really dislike?

Caine: Shit, there’s a list. That guy that Ava used to work with, Dom… yeah that ****** is lucky he is alive. Yes I am very possessive, and only slightly jealous. (Smirks.)

Marie:  What is your deepest desire?

Caine: To eventually get out of this war and make a life for Ava and myself; it’s not safe now to be too far from the gossip, and the assignments we keep getting prevent us from living out our desires.

Marie:  What is your greatest fear?

Caine: Having to lose Ava, or the future we both want. Yeah I’m a sap… deal with it.

Well, it looks like we're running out of time. Thank you for visiting us today, Caine.

Caine:  You’re welcome. Just make sure my number doesn’t get published with this beautiful piece.

Marie:  Of course! (Laughs.)
I wish you luck with Ava. It was...uh, certainly interesting to meet you.  (Waves at her guest as he heads off the stage.)

Now, let's shift over and get the author's perspective.  We have Lauren Peyton on the stage today!  Hi, Lauren!

Author Lauren Peyton:  Hello.

Marie:  We just got to talk to the hero of your story, Caine.  Quite an interesting character. Can you tell us a little about him?
Lauren:  Caine? He is definitely an alpha male type. He likes to be in control, but he doesn’t quite realize that Ava controls him more. He is also very loud. Caine is tall, dark, handsome, and powerful in many ways.

Marie:  All right. So, what are your character's greatest strengths?

Lauren:  Does his super cockiness count? He is strong and passionate about what he does. He really lives the lifestyle of a lust demon, or he did until little Miss Ava settled him down.
Marie:  (Smiles.) What are his greatest weaknesses?
Lauren:  His weakness that may prevent him from doing everything required of him may be Ava. He would sacrifice anyone and anything to keep her safe, and sometimes because of her he doesn’t think straight.
Marie:  Well, I think love can do that sometimes.
So, what are some of his favorite foods?
Lauren:  He loves steak and potatoes, but his favorite dish in which he actually licks the plate is a roast, mashed potatoes, and gravy. He loves whipped cream and chocolate sauce as well, but that is for activities other than eating…
Marie:  What's a positive quality that your character is unaware that he or she has?

Lauren: He is unaware that he is a good guy. He thinks he is this hard-ass that will always get his way because he’s rough and tough, but he is generally good, for a demon at least.

Marie:  Will readers like or dislike this character, and why?

Lauren: I think you will love him despite your best efforts to hate him. He is a strong male that has to learn so much. He also is a smart-ass so prepare yourself.

Marie:  (Laughs.) Yes, I believed we noticed that already.
Well, now that we have a real taste of Caine, we have a few questions for you as well as the author.

What first gave you the idea for Demonically Yours
?

Lauren: Demonically Yours came from a necessary point in my opinion. We have so many amazing books on vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural beings but not so many on demons. I wanted to spin a few different facts of Demons from different views and give a story that was different.

Marie:  Well, I can certainly respect that!

So, what is your writing style like?  Are you a pantster or a plotter?

Lauren:  I am a total plotter. I have character profiles, outlines, and much more. I have a general plot for the series, and a specific plot for each book.

Marie:  Great!

I’m throwing this one in for our aspiring writers.  Did you come across any specific challenges in writing Demonically Yours or getting it published?  What would you do differently the next time?

Lauren:   I came across time as a big challenge. I have many roles I fulfill during the day. I had to sit down and make time to write. I now sit and try to do a half hour or an hour-long sprint as often as I can. My best advice is to write for you. Write a story you love and that you can be proud of because that is the most important thing; if you can’t stand by your work, then why write it?

Marie:  Very true! That is great advice.

Well, it was such a pleasure having you here on Writing in the Modern Age, Isobelle. We hope you can come back sometime.

Readers, I hope you all get a chance to pick up a copy of this awesome book!

Here is the blurb for Demonically Yours.

He was built for sin...

I fell for a dark stranger, a painfully beautiful one. With his impressive physique and exotic accent, I couldn't keep him out of my dreams. But when those dreams turned to nightmares I started looking for answers. I'd asked the questions before, but I'd always been kept in the dark. Who Am I? Why Am I Different?

I demand the truth, I have to know what my part in this war is before it's too late... And why the vision of this dark stranger captivates me...
