At sixteen, Sarah Atwell walked away from her love of horses and a promising career as a competitive rider after discovering she’d inherited the family curse. Years later, her grandmother stunned everyone by leaving Sarah her horse farm—worth millions—but with conditions Sarah might not be able to meet.

A former Redclaw agent, Casey Barnes retired when a security assignment went bad, killing his partner and leaving him as a partial amputee. His inner wolf is in hiding. He’s been living quietly as a horse trainer, but June Atwell’s death now pits him against her granddaughter for rights to the stable.

With both of them snowed in at the farm, a series of increasingly serious accidents draws Sarah and Casey closer together, but they both harbor secrets that might tear them apart.

Fabulous cover! Congratulations on your new release!

So, what are readers saying about this book?

"What a lovely mix of a rural and paranormal setting, suspense and bad guys, and lots of romance to stir things along to give the reader a freshness not often found these days. The author also managed to handle a damaged hero with finesse." - BarbarinaS, Amazon

"There was never a dull moment in Ghost of a Chance! This story had lots of tense moments but mixed in with the tension was a sweet smoldering romance that really had the 'awww' factor. In addition to an emotionally high stakes romance, there was a mystery element that kept me guessing as to why the farm was being targeted. That was quite the surprise." - The Genre Minx Book Reviews, Amazon

"Outstanding! Something this good should be on every paranormal/shifter romance reader’s ‘must read’ list. I think that even people who don’t normally choose paranormal stories, would like what they find between the covers of this book. I am so glad that I stumbled across this book, because I loved everything about it and Ms. Dean is now on my 'Must Read’ author list! I look forward to many more reading adventures with her books in the future!" - Angela Hayes, Amazon

Here is an excerpt from Ghost of a Chance.

For some reason, he glanced back at Sarah where she waited by the door. The backlight of falling snow through the glass in the shadowed hallway created the suggestion of a black-and-white photograph. The only spot of color was the bright red scarf at the collar of her coat and the wine-dark lipstick she wore. She leaned against the wall with her eyes closed. Something inside him clicked, as though recognizing a scene from a movie. His heart stopped a beat, flipped over, and thudded again with increased intensity.

No. It couldn’t be. Not her.

He hurried away, head still reeling at his reaction.

When he returned with an armload of clothing, she was nowhere to be seen. Her laptop sat by her shoes, one pretty little pump turned over on its side. As expected, he discovered her in the living room, staring at the pictures on the wall. “There you are.”

She jumped at the sound of his voice.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” He adjusted the heap of clothing piled over one arm and held out a pair of snow boots.

“She had so many photographs of me.” Sarah took the boots almost automatically, and indicated the walls covered with pictures, ones Casey had seen many times.

That had to be it. Why she felt so familiar. Why she seemed to be the one. Relief washed over him. Obviously he’d spent too much time alone if he thought Sarah Atwell was his destined mate.

Wow! Sounds intriguing!

Let's chat with the author for a bit...

McKenna, nice to have you here on Writing in the Modern Age! Glad you could stop by!

Can you tell us a little bit about your background? When did your first book come out and where can we get it?

I’ve been published for about 8 years now, writing under a different pen name. I realized last year I didn’t have any recognizable brand, writing historicals, contemporaries, M/M romance, you name it. I decided to rebrand myself with a new pen name and focus on one genre: paranormal romance.

Okay...great!

A lot of readers love origin stories. What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve been making up stories and writing them down as long as I can remember. I wrote fan fiction before I knew what it was called. Getting published seemed like a pipe dream, however, so after I graduated from high school, I stopped writing and focused on my career. It wasn’t until many years later when I discovered online fanfic archives, that I began writing again. That gave me the confidence to submit my first story for publication—and to my surprise, it was accepted! As was the next one, and the next one… I wrote whatever I wanted, any genre. Last year, I realized I should have picked one genre and concentrated on getting one book after another out in that genre. That’s when I decided to remake myself into McKenna Dean.

Nice! And I've been writing for a long time as well. ;)

Let me ask a different question...

How did you get into writing paranormal romance?

I’ve always enjoyed science fiction and mysteries, so I love adding these elements to my romances. The paranormal genre seemed to be the best fit, allowing me the world-building I love, while setting my characters within an elite paranormal security agency let me spin in suspense as well. It’s the best of both worlds!

I love paranormal stories too!

Well, the decision you made certainly appears to agree with you! I say do whatever makes you happy.

So...what do you feel sets Ghost of a Chance apart from other books in the genre?

One of the things I like doing is empowering my heroines to see how strong they really are. Not all of them are kick-ass Redclaw Agents, who have the training and the confidence to see a case through. In Ghost, Sarah Atwell is a fan-girl—much like myself—who has been raised to hide her true self from the world. As much as it is a love story, it’s also a story about Sarah discovering her self-worth. Love doesn’t rescue her—but it helps her accept who she really is.

Hey, we could all use a little more of that!

McKenna Dean has been an actress, a vet tech, a singer, a teacher, a biologist, and a dog trainer. She’s worked in a genetics lab, at the stockyard, behind the scenes as a props manager, and at a pizza parlor slinging dough. Finally she realized all these jobs were just preparation for what she really wanted to be: a writer.

She lives on a small farm in North Carolina with her family, as well as the assorted dogs, cats, and various livestock.

She likes putting her characters in hot water to see how strong they are. Like tea bags, only sexier.
