Nothing could have prepared them for the last day. Death swept away the lives of billions, but spared Dan Amenta and his family, leading them to an uncertain future. When merely surviving isn't enough and the hunt for answers begins, memories from the past and troubling encounters lead Dan to the truth about the extermination of the human race. Distressing revelations will give new meaning to their very existence.

Early humans shaped the future and seeded a plan millions of years in the making. Now survivors must choose: Endure a future with no past or fade away into a past with no future?

So, what are readers saying about this title?

☆☆

"Creepy and too believable. I usually don't have that much trouble putting a book down. Most of the time I have a pretty good idea what's going to happen next and even if I don't, it takes a lot of suspense to keep me reading beyond my usual half-hour morning session on my stationary bike or in the evening before I go to sleep. I'm not impressed by either vampires or zombies. This book, however, was another story, literally and figuratively.
Not only was the suspense palpable, it sucked me into a world that in some ways was too familiar. All quality fiction transports the reader to another place and/or time, but it's usually relatively easy (at least for me) to separate the story from reality. Not so with this one.

There are numerous interesting plot developments and a few more surprises. I will say that the majority of questions are answered by the conclusion and the explanations are not as far-fetched as you might expect, again adding to the rather alarming message underlying this brilliant novel." - 5X Space Cadet, Amazon

☆☆

"Compelling read. It's hard to find a book today that keeps my attention. Daimones drew me in immediately and kept me coming back. Although there were some missteps (we are in Geneva and English is universally spoken and even signs in stores are written in English and a guy in New York writes a computer message just like he speaks "youse" to make some regional point, I guess). I overlooked them. The story unfolds at a snails pace but is also deliberate with Dan discovering one morning that he and his family may be the only humans left. When I was a child we worried about the neutron bomb that would leave buildings standing but kill all the people. I would sometimes fanatize about rummaging through other people's homes. Kinda how Dan explores the world around him. Slowly, carefully trying to figure things out. His thoughts keep us engrossed. His musings on how life will be from now on are compelling. And the scientific explanations are intriguing. Although in the end this cautionary tale repeats the apocryphal message told many times before, it is worth repeating and Daimones is worth a read." - Karen S. Bell, Amazon

☆☆

"A remarkable End of the World saga. This is an outstanding, engaging, and very relatable tale of the End of the World, as we know it. I loved the smooth prose writing of Massimo Marino. I very much liked the confusion and issues of his first person POV Dan Amenta. I liked his wife Mary, daughter Annah and close friend Laura. While the tale keeps the 'nature' of who caused the sudden death of nearly all of humanity an uncertain source until the last fifth of the novel, I was okay with that. Dan has a childhood secret that links into the final mystery of Why? some entity destroyed most of humankind. The answer to Why? delves into mythology, ancient history, solar system dynamics and the issue of whether humanity can be worth saving in an uncertain future. Marino's answer to that question takes on an almost biblical level of mythologizing, but for me it worked. In fact it worked so well I am buying books two and three. If you want a dystopian tale that involves real people who could be your neighbors, read Daimones. Highly recommended." - T. Jackson King, Amazon

Sounds intriguing!

What are readers saying about this title?

☆☆

"Couldn't put it down. This book grabbed me and sucked me in. I felt like I was there, living the angst, the love, the mystery. The character development was spot on and the story compelled me to read late into the night. It was like going to a great movie when 2 hours goes by like 2 minutes." - Dot9000, Amazon

☆☆

"Really believable sci-fi. Very creative premise combined with not farfetched idea that a change can happen to the human race orchestrated by far greater beings. I read maybe 5 books a month and this is worth reading as is the companion novel." - Don Desautels, Amazon

☆☆

"Great book! Once again Massimo has done it, kept me reading and reading and wanting more. And when Dan goes to another planet so goes my mind. Unfortunately I'm brought back to reality...Nice plot, nice story, great imagination!" - Radolfo Milos, Amazon

Here is an excerpt from Once Humans.

The dogs had been slaughtered. Not a quick death either...no pity or mercy for their suffering. They did not waste a bullet for our companions; a large machete-like blade had slashed through their bodies. The guts of the male left a trace as he tried to drag himself away from the killing rage. A barbaric act, and probably a message for us. I looked at Laura with a muted question.
“I wanted you to see the place as we found it,” Laura said. “I left the two guys here, as a precaution, but instructed them not to touch anything.”
Laura gestured to our escort and the group scattered around the perimeter.
The barn was open and many animals were missing. Those still there—and their entrails—covered the floor. The walls were splattered, giving the impression concrete bled, too. A stench of gas and death assailed me.

Yikes!

The Rise of the Phoenix, The Daimones Trilogy, Volume 3:

https://books2read.com/u/3nnWwx

War is inevitable, and the human race sets out to finally deliver retribution.
An alien colonization has altered the destiny of the human race forever. After wiping out billions of people, the race known as the Moîrai created a new, transgenic species of humans called the Selected -- giving them both the gift and burden of longevity and memories of human history on another world.

The aliens charged the Selected with the responsibility of caring for "the spared ones," unaltered humans who survived the global catastrophe. That includes Dan Amenta's daughter Hope, the only spared one who remains.
Together, Dan and Hope have witnessed Earth transform into a different world, where a powerful new neurological drug sparks the rapid evolution of the Selected, but Hope is nearing death. Once she's gone, obligations die with her, and the path is clear for a chain of events destined to rip apart the foundations of the galaxy.

And what are readers saying about this title?

☆☆

"The crescendo and more. Having read Daimones and Once Human, the first two books in this series, this third book takes the post apocalyptic experiences of the genetically upgraded human, Dan Amenta, to a whole new level. From a dying race, subjugated by an alien race, the Humans, under Dan's leadership, rise to be a force to be reckoned with.

The Rise of the Phoenix is a gripping read and uses third person narrative as well as the familiar first person from Dan's perspective. This allows the author to extend his point of view beyond what is happening in Dan's presence. Massimo has excelled his previous work in bringing us a exciting, heart pounding adventure with advanced technologies and a galactic world not to distant in the future.

If you loved Daimones and Once Human, you will not be disappointed with The Rise of the Phoenix. A must read for science fiction fans, and those wanting a moral challenge.
" - Jim Murdoch, Amazon

☆☆

"Who better to write science fiction than a scientist? The Rise of the Pheonix is the conclusion of the Daimones Trilogy. In the beginning the Aliens created a new species named the selected and almost wiped out the human race. A newly created drug with the ability to speed the evolution of new humans has created a new order and it is to be put in place. Marino has crafted a strange world and, although complex, is easy to follow. His imagination knows no bounds. The story is gripping and always exciting. A must read for all science fiction fans." - Joseph, Amazon

☆☆

"Let Phoenix Rise! I’m not a big sci-fi fan, but I participated in a reading as part of a book exchange. However, I was impressed by the cover of this book, intrigued by its title, and the plot has a leisure feel which made it effortless to read and finish. Massimo’s voice in this story reminds me of a relaxed Darth Vader narrating it. This is a story about a new neurological drug that endeavors to create new humans and a new world order. In this story, Massimo’s creativity stretches beyond the galaxies of the average human imagination such as my own. For sci-fi fans, you will enjoy The Rise of the Phoenix." - LovetoRead Book Reviews, Amazon

Nice!

Here is an excerpt from The Rise of the Phoenix.

My daughter, the wrinkled and dying woman lying in front of me, was the oldest-looking human on the entire planet. Yet, to the rest of the world, she was leaving us the youngest, as the new humans her age looked like they’d just passed puberty.
The med-unit hummed solemnly. Hope felt my presence and opened her eyes, a tired look but the same as her mother’s, Laura.
She didn’t have much hair anymore, and it had long since lost its ebony beauty. My heart shrunk in pain. How many times had I watched the people I loved the most leave me? It hurt more each time; there’s no drill and no training to teach one’s heart how to bear the loss of another. My heart grew colder and harder with each death.
“Dad.” Hope greeted me with a broken voice.
I thought I would have been strong, that the Palladium made me stronger. How wrong I was. I’d already lost my wife Mary, and Laura, then my first daughter, Annah, and now Hope’s life was vanishing before me and I couldn’t do anything about it. With all my resilience, strength, and inhuman capabilities, there I was...a broken father watching his little girl dying. What a cruel destiny the Moîrai had imposed on us Selected.
“How are you?”
“I’m tired.” She sighed. “But I’m ready.”
I took a deep breath and walked up to her. Unable to say anything, I stepped to her bedside and took that bony hand.
She smiled. “Your hand is warm, and I’m so cold...”
My eyes looked for the nurse. “I’ll tell the doctors to raise the temperature.”
Hope shook her head. “Inside...”
At those words, my eyes filled with tears. “Darling...”
“Dad...” she whispered. “I want my bed.”
I managed to collect some air and sound calm. “You won’t last an hour in your bed, sweetie.”
“I know.” Hope let go a long sigh. “Would you do something for me?”
“Anything.” I looked at her, eager to do whatever she needed. My heart hung to her lips and I bent forward.
Her eyes mocked me. “I know where I am.”
Befuddled, I probed her mind. “How?” I started.
“Am I not your daughter?”
I blushed. “Hope, I didn’t want you to—” I glanced down as she squeezed my hand to interrupt me.
With an effort, she raised her head. “Shhhh. It’s okay, Dad. Let everyone watch if they need to, but let me watch everyone, too.”
My voice cracked. “You’ll never be forgotten.” My eyes held hers. “I love you so much.”
“I know, Dad.” Her hand squeezed mine again. “Please, let me see, let me start the new beginning.”
I didn’t know then, but those words put the seed of revenge in my heart and found fertile ground.
