POETRY SPOTLIGHT: Penny Estelle on Rhyming (PLUS a little contest for a free book!)

Hi, readers!  In these poetry spotlights today and in the future, we will be showcasing poetry by some very talented poets.  These poets have graced us with their presence.

With us today is poet Penny Estelle.  Here is a little taste of her poetry and an explanation on her style.

Good afternoon, Marie.  Thanks so much for having me today!

SOOOOO, we are talking poetry.  Here’s what I know about this subject.  Apparently there are different kinds of poetry, but I am only familiar with the sing-song rhyming kind.  Here’s my story –

My sister’s fiftieth birthday was coming up and there was to be a surprise party for her.  I wrote a quick overview of her life to the tune of “Jingle Bells”.  I found out I could actually rhyme words (as can anybody over the age of three!)  But I have become the rhyming entertainment for all family events and I find I enjoy it.

I’ve written several little kids poems and EVENTUALLY, I would like to do a book for the early readers with short stories and poems.  It’s a work in progress.  I am including two of the poems I’ve written.  One was actually published in an e-magazine that has since gone debunked!

Poetry:

The Five Butterflies

It flew by my nose, yellow as the sun.

It’s on that pink rose.  Can you see that one?

Here comes another, orange and blue.

He just wants to play.  Now there are two.

They fly off together and land on the tree.

A red one has joined them and now there are three.

Something flies by.  “Look mom, one more.”

It’s green with black spots and now there are four.

A purple and orange one flutters close by.

The other four follow and now there are five.

I look by the flowers that grow by the pond.

I guess I’ll go home now.  The butterflies are gone.

Man in the Moon

I asked my mom, “Will he come tonight?”

She kissed my head and said, “He just might.”

I ran to the window and mom said with a smile,

“The sun needs to set, it won’t be for awhile.”

I went outside and saw my first clue.

The sky was streaked with pink and dark blue.

Clue number two came from the park.

The kids had gone home.  It soon would be dark.

He must be here now.  The street lights are on.

Lightening bugs are playing outside on the lawn.

“Well let’s go,” said Dad.  “We’ll see if he’s there.”

I ran outside and could only stare.

There he was for the world to see.

The Man in the Moon was winking at me!

A Note to Readers:

I write for all ages.  I have several kids’ books out, (witches, magic, time travel, fantasy, adventure, and even puppy love gets in the mix) several for the older crowd, (romance, family drama, some paranormal, and a historical western romance) and even one non-fiction on our life living on solar.

If you would like to learn more about my books and/or me please visit the links below.  I love visitors.  :)

Tell you what!  If I get some comments below, I will draw a name out of a hat and that person will get a PDF copy of any of the books I have out!  Leave your email address!

Thanks for stopping by!

Poet Bio

My name is Penny Estelle. I am a retired school secretary.  In my twenty-one years working for an elementary school, I heard excuses of every kind as to why Kindergarten through eighth grade students were sent to see the principal. Everything from, “It wasn’t me. It was my evil twin!” to “I went to take an aspirin and I took my mom’s medication by mistake! It’s made me crazy!” I enjoyed working with children of all ages, which got me started on writing short stories.

I now live on a 54 acre ranch in VERY RURAL, NW Arizona, with my wonderful husband.  It is a constant work in progress. We live on solar and wind, which has been a real adjustment! On any given evening, the stars are an awesome sight and can be seen as far as the eye can see!
