About the Book:

Connell KurÄ“n doesn’t love being a paparazzo…

He’s a member of the most scorned profession in Hollywood, but he’s good at it, and a hard-ass to boot.

He might also be called an ambulance chaser, though not for the disreputable reason he chases celebrities. Connell has the ability to heal, and at the sound of a siren, he is drawn to those in need.

Life is just fine until his pushy paparazzi nature almost gets someone killed.

Rowan Bren suffers post-traumatic stress and a permanent headache following a near-death experience at the hands of her mortal enemy. After months, she still isn’t right, but she won’t be held back from seeking her bond mate, Con, any longer.

She travels to Los Angeles motivated to help her friend, Idris, with his brilliant plan to locate their missing people. But Rowan’s top priority in the City of Angels is to find Con. She doesn’t know where he lives, but she’s not worried, because her crystal will lead her straight to him.

When she trips into his world, she finds a man so different from the person she expects, she fears he might not be Con at all. That he might be possessed by an evil force like the one that almost killed her.

Siren Song is the third novel of the Chameleon Effect series. Young and New Adult readers who love sci-fi/fantasy, adventure and romance with a paranormal twist are sure to love Siren Song.

So, what are readers saying about this book?

☆☆

"Amazing series! Alex Hayes, you did it again...amazing work! I really enjoyed the first two books and this one. I cannot get enough. The characters and the story line are great. Well written with romance and adventure. Connell and Rowan will have you turning pages. I received an ARC for an honest review and I loved it!" - Nilda, Amazon

☆☆

"Great love and family story! This was an amazing story with true and lasting love and commitment being a main part of the storyline. This shows alternate ways that 2 persons could be connected, without fail, and without prejudice. I loved how the characters interacted, were able to change and accept one another. I personally love to read new 'takes' on people or beings from 'somewhere else'.
I look forward to reading more...
" - Tina L, Amazon

☆☆

"Siren Song is amazing. I love this tale from the first page to the last. After reading Silken Scales and Perfect Pitch, I didn’t think Alex Hayes's creative writing could get any better, but boy oh boy, was I wrong. Connell and Rowan, OH WOW! This tale has action, romance, adventure with a strong storyline and wonderful, interesting characters. I highly recommend this book. But also try Books 1 & 2.
I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.

"Great book well worth reading. I loved this book, I love the concept behind the series. I love the character development and the new characters we meet along the way. I look forward to the next book in the series. I would not recommend reading this book before reading book one (Silken Scales), but both this book and book one ended well without leaving you hanging on a cliff hanger. I feel like you probably could read this book without reading book one first, but it is definitely more enjoyable with the background laid down in book one." - Paul D. Cobbs, Amazon

Wow, intriguing!

Let's chat with the author for a bit...

Alex, nice to have you here on Writing in the Modern Age! Glad you could stop by!

Can you tell us a little bit about your life or background? When did your first book come and where can we get it?

My first, first book was published in 2004—wow, fifteen years ago—but while I wrote a lot during those fifteen years, I didn’t get serious as a published author until 2018, when I published The Golden Thread, a tie-in novella to my main series, The Chameleon Effect.

Since then, I have published the first three books of The Chameleon Effect series, Silken Scales, Perfect Pitch and Siren Song. I will also be bringing out a tie-in novel, Steel Strings, December 2019.

Nice!

A lot of readers love origin stories. What inspired you to start writing?

My mom inspired me to write my first full-length novel. As a kid, I was writing stories all the time, mostly terrible fairy tales and romances. But one day, my mom pulled out this book, and she showed me a novel she had written out by hand before I was born.

Not only did she impress me, but she inspired me to write my first novel when I was eighteen. That novel eventually—many years later—became my first published book, Ice Cracks.

As you might imagine, my mom was one of my greatest supporters. She loved reading my stories and was really happy that I shared her love of storytelling.

That's awesome! :)

Let me ask a different question...

How did you get into writing in your genre?

I’ve always been a sucker for a good love story. I can remember as a child loving Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. I’d sneak out of bed to read them and other fairy tales. As I grew older, I spent hours at the library. I read a lot of great romances, like the novels by Mary Stewart [oldies but goodies, my mother introduced me to these], and a lot of terrible ones. Reading the full spectrum of the genre taught me a lot about quality and characterization. I have also loved fantasy and science fiction since a young age. When I was young, I read works by C.S. Lewis (Yes, he wrote science fiction too.) and Isaac Asimov and Anne McCaffrey, to name a few.

Great! I say do whatever makes you happy.

So, what do you feel sets Siren Song apart from other books in the genre?

Hmm...

I’m going to say depth and complexity. I feel that writing well means writing in layers. I remember an analogy from C.S. Lewis’ The Last Battle (Chronicles of Narnia), which I last read when I was probably fourteen! He described the worlds of Narnia as being like an onion, one layered upon another. Writing a good story is a bit like that, too. And theme is what ties all those layers together. Siren Song has three character arcs and its theme is about coming home, as exemplified by Idris’ song title: “Won’t You Come Home to Me?” It’s not so much about coming home to a physical place as an emotional one: find where one belongs amongst others and finding one’s home—one’s happy and contented place—in oneself.

Sounds good. Hey, we could all use a little more of that!
