Alex, nice to have you here on Writing in the Modern Age! Glad you could stop by!

 

 

Can you tell us a little bit about your life or background? When did your first book come and where can we get it?

 

My first, first book was published in 2004—wow, fifteen years ago—but while I wrote a lot during those fifteen years, I didn’t get serious as a published author until 2018, when I published The Golden Thread, a tie-in novella to my main series, The Chameleon Effect.

Since then, I have published the first three books of The Chameleon Effect series, Silken Scales, Perfect Pitch and Siren Song. I will also be bringing out a tie-in novel, Steel Strings, December 2019.

A lot of readers love origin stories. What inspired you to start writing?

 

My mom inspired me to write my first full-length novel. As a kid, I was writing stories all the time, mostly terrible fairy tales and romances. But one day, my mom pulled out this book, and she showed me a novel she had written out by hand before I was born.

Not only did she impress me, but she inspired me to write my first novel when I was eighteen. That novel eventually—many years later—became my first published book, Ice Cracks.

As you might imagine, my mom was one of my greatest supporters. She loved reading my stories and was really happy that I shared her love of storytelling.

Let me ask a different question...

How did you get into writing in your genre?

 

I’ve always been a sucker for a good love story. I can remember as a child loving Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. I’d sneak out of bed to read them and other fairy tales. As I grew older, I spent hours at the library. I read a lot of great romances, like the novels by Mary Stewart [oldies but goodies, my mother introduced me to these], and a lot of terrible ones. Reading the full spectrum of the genre taught me a lot about quality and characterization. I have also loved fantasy and science fiction since a young age. When I was young, I read works by C.S. Lewis (Yes, he wrote science fiction too.) and Isaac Asimov and Anne McCaffrey, to name a few.

 

Great! I say do whatever makes you happy.

 

So, what do you feel sets Siren Song apart from other books in the genre?

 

Hmm...

I’m going to say depth and complexity. I feel that writing well means writing in layers. I remember an analogy from C.S. Lewis’ The Last Battle (Chronicles of Narnia), which I last read when I was probably fourteen! He described the worlds of Narnia as being like an onion, one layered upon another. Writing a good story is a bit like that, too. And theme is what ties all those layers together. Siren Song has three character arcs and its theme is about coming home, as exemplified by Idris’ song title: “Won’t You Come Home to Me?” It’s not so much about coming home to a physical place as an emotional one: find where one belongs amongst others and finding one’s home—one’s happy and contented place—in oneself.

About the Author:

Alex Hayes wrote her first fiction story when she was twelve. Inspired by her mother’s storytelling, she began work on her first novel, Ice Cracks, at eighteen.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. In her twenties, she moved from Marin County, California to Boston, Massachusetts, where she built a career as an IT professional in database engineering. In 2004, she self-published Ice Cracks, which became a semi-finalist in the 2005 IPPY Awards.

Alex splits her time between Grand Junction, Colorado and Guanajuato, Mexico. When she isn’t writing, she’s helping her partner, Lee, renovate a 450 year old hacienda. She is mother to one beautiful daughter and many wonderful cats.
