Service Interview with Melissa Chan

Today we're doing a different type of interview, and it should be enlightening to both writers and readers following the blog.

My guest today is Melissa Chan.  Hello! Welcome to Writing in the Modern Age! It’s such a pleasure to have you here.

Hi, Marie and fellow readers and writers! Thank you for letting me visit.

Of course!

Can you tell us a little bit about your company, and how Writing in the Modern Age readers can benefit from it?

https://literarybookgifts.com/

Literary Book Gifts brings novels into the real world by putting high quality prints of book cover and book related artwork onto shirts and bags. Discussion and sharing ideas is more important than ever. Writing in the Modern Age readers can benefit from using the artwork as a platform for constructive thought and discussion about the ideas presented in the novels. Whether or not they wear a shirt, or simply view the artwork from the website, the ideas can be transmitted and shared.

Okay, great! I think a love of reading has brought us all here in some capacity. ;)

Melissa, are you also a writer? What genre or genres should we expect to see you in? Do you use a pseudonym?

Unfortunately no, I’m not a writer, but maybe one day I will sit down to write that big novel that many of us writers or non-writers feel like we have within us. Perhaps I will try some poetry first. But in the meantime, I am a reader and hopefully one day all my reading will help me to write a great story.

Definitely!

How was Literary Book Gifts launched, or what spurred the idea?

Literary Book Gifts launched based on the concept that great novels are meant to be discussed and shared. Expressing oneself is a basic and essential part of the human experience, and these designs are aimed to spur interest in the minds of readers, young, old, and from various genres. All in the effort to promote the interest and desire to read.

Great! So, what sets your company apart from other services?

People come in all shapes, sizes, and with different preferences. Beyond the design itself, these shirts come in sizes ranging from women’s XS-3XL, and men’s S-5XL and in a wide range of colors to choose from. This sets Literary Book Gifts apart from other similar companies who do not support the same diversity of sizing and colors.

Nice! Also, what is the one thing that you truly love about your job?

I love being able to connect with other like-minded individuals who value literature, ideas, and art. When someone tells me how much they love a certain design it really hits home and I appreciate every comment, question, and compliment.

Awesome...

Do you offer any products related to contemporary authors/books?

Unfortunately no, but I do hope to someday. Contemporary authors and books tend to be tied up with rights. But perhaps one day I will be able to!

I can see how bibliophiles would truly love your site! How do you intend to expand your services or company in the future?

I’d love to see the designs on duvet covers and pillow cases; I think they would make excellent statement pieces in the bedroom!

Hey, that would be great!

Let's try some general questions.

Do you have any favorite authors?

Yes! I love J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. It is just such a powerful novel with such strong emotive value. I love reading it over and over again.

All right.

So, how about a different question?

When reading, do you prefer traditional printed books or ebooks? And why?

I actually prefer audiobooks! I find it very relaxing, and a lot more immersive than reading the written word.

It's certainly more convenient!

Can you tell us what you're reading for fun now?

Right now I am reading Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood. I have never found a writer who writes as richly as she does.

Okay.

Here's a scenario. If you were trapped on a deserted island, what five essentials would you carry with you? You can include books.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville

Art History Textbook (must include Impressionism!)

Laptop with internet…is this allowed?

Smartphone with thousands of audiobooks downloaded onto it

A survival book

Sounds like a plan!

Well...to wrap this up, here's my last question, or questions, I suppose.

Are there any words you'd like to impart to book readers? Or even to writers? Any advice you can give us?

Also, how can readers find out more about getting a specialized item? What is the best way for potential clients to follow you?

Keep reading, and keep writing. Keep the spirit of literature alive in any way you can!

The best advice I can give you is keep reading any and every book that appeals to you. Much of what I learned I did so through strong narratives.
