A Character Interview with Lyla from FROST ON MY PILLOW plus a conversation with author Leah Hamrick!

Today we're bringing something different to Writing in the Modern Age in the form of a character interview.  These character interviews, now and in the future, should prove to be very enlightening for all of us.

We have the pleasure of meeting Lyla, a character from Frost on My Pillow.

We'll get a chance to talk to the author, Leah Hamrick, in a bit, but now we have on the stage...Lyla!

Interview

Marie Lavender:  Hello, Lyla.  Please have a seat.

Character Lyla:  Hello, Marie.

Marie:  Awesome to have you here! We're going to start out with some simple questions, okay?

Lyla:  All right.

Marie:  So, what is your occupation? Are you any good at it?  Do you like it?
Lyla:  I work at a coffee place, and yeah, I love it. I love sweet things!

Marie:  Nice!

So, tell us...what is your family like?

Lyla:  I grew up with an abusive family. Enough said.

Marie:  Oh, no! Sorry to hear that. :(

Ah, let's try something else.

What did your childhood home look like?

Lyla:  I grew up in the Summer Solstice, which is a world hidden within the real world, here in Toledo, Ohio. My home itself was small. There wasn’t a lot of room, and everything, including the doors and floorboards, squeaked.

Marie:  Wow!

Do you have any hobbies? What do you enjoy doing?

Lyla:  I enjoy making out with my hot boyfriend Ethan. Oh, and dancing in my own fire tornadoes!

Marie: Okay. I'm sure there's a little more to that story, but I can wait.

So, what is your greatest dream, Lyla?

Lyla:  I dream of one day getting past my abusive childhood. I need to learn to forgive and forget, but it’s hard.

Marie:  (Nods.) And no one could blame you for struggling with that.

Let's try a different question.

What kind of person do you wish you could be? What is stopping you?

Lyla:  I wish I could be a stronger person. I have demons after my stupid charm, my boyfriend Ethan is getting hurt, and I don't know what to do.

Marie:  Oh, my! That's unfortunate!

So...if it's not too painful or personal, can you tell us one thing? Who was your first love?

Lyla:  Ethan, for sure.

Marie: (Sighs.) I love a good love story! He has a great name too! ;)

What's the most terrible thing that ever happened to you, Lyla?

Lyla:  Getting shot in the stomach, for sure. That hurt like a bitch! But no, maybe watching my boyfriend getting tossed around by an invisible demon, and not being able to do anything about it… that was hard on me.

Marie:  Ouch! I bet. :(

(Pauses.)

Let's try another question, shall we?

(Nods.)

What was your dream growing up? Did you achieve that dream? If so, in what ways was it not what you expected? If you never achieved that dream, why not?

Lyla:  My dream was leaving the Summer Solstice… and yes, that happened for me.

Marie: Well, that's a good thing, right?

I want to ask you something else...

Who is your role model, Lyla?

Lyla:  Um, what the hell is a role model? Remember, I don't know all this world's terms yet.

Marie: Oh, geez. My bad! Perhaps your creator will tell me a bit more later.

So, is there someone you pretend to like but really dislike?

Lyla:  No. If I don't like someone, I’m gonna tell them.

Marie:  (Smiles.) Well, I appreciate your candor.

What is your deepest desire?

Lyla:  (Blushes.) That can NOT be spoken aloud!

Marie:  (Giggles.) Oh. Oops! I meant in general terms, but all right.

And what is your greatest fear, Lyla?

Lyla:  Losing Ethan or Rylan…

Marie: That's tough. I can certainly understand where you're coming from. I think we all worry about those we love.

Well, it looks like we're running out of time, Lyla. Thank you for visiting us today.

It was so interesting getting to know you.  (Waves at her guest as she heads off the stage.) Now, let's shift over and get the author's perspective.  We have Leah Hamrick on the stage today!

Hi, Leah!

Author Leah Hamrick:  Hello! Glad to be here!

Marie:  (Smiles.) Welcome to Writing in the Modern Age!

So, we just got to talk to a female character from your story...Lyla. Quite an interesting character. Can you tell us a little about her?

Leah:  She is a whiny brat, let me tell you. She keeps me up all night by talking loudly and screaming at me to write her story.

Marie:  (Laughs.) I know exactly what you mean!  ;)

Let's try a different question.

What are your character's greatest strengths?

Leah:  I think her greatest strength is pretending like nothing is wrong when it is. She wants to be strong and act like it, even though she is hurting inside.

Marie:  (Nods.) I bet a lot of us are guilty of that!

So, what are her greatest weaknesses?

Leah:  Ethan. Definitely.

Marie:  Mmm-hmm. Sounds like a total hottie...

And what are some of Lyla's favorite foods?

Leah:  Pizza! Fries! Grease! LOL!

Marie:  (Chuckles.) Okay!

What's a positive quality that your character is unaware he or she has?

Leah:  She would do anything for anyone.

Marie:  That's quite an admirable trait!

So, will readers like or dislike this character, and why?

Leah:  They will love her.

Marie:  Great!

Well, now that we have a real taste of Lyla, we have a few questions for you as well as the author.

What first gave you the idea for Frost on My Pillow?

Leah:  It just popped into my mind one day... it was supposed to be a high fantasy, but that never happened. I liked her in our world after a while.

Marie:  Isn't it interesting how the muse works in such mysterious ways? ;)

So, what is your writing style like, Leah?

Leah:  First person past tense...

Marie:  Nice!

Well, I'm throwing this one in for our aspiring writers.

Did you come across any specific challenges in writing Frost on My Pillow, or getting it published? What would you do differently next time?

Leah:  No, I had no issues with it. It was amazing from the first sentence to the last.

Marie: All right!

It was such a pleasure having you on Writing in the Modern Age, Leah. We hope you can come back sometime soon!

Leah:  Thank you for having me here!

Marie:  Of course! :)
